UN appeals for the Olympic Truce during London 2012 Games

The United Nations (UN) Secretary General, Ban Ki-moon, and the President of the 66th UN General Assembly, Nassir Abdulaziz Al-Nasser, have called on all UN Member States to observe the traditional Olympic Truce from today’s start of the Games of the XXX Olympiad, on 27 July, until the close of the XIV Paralympic Games, on 9 September in London.

In his message, Ban Ki-moon recalled that “today, sports and events such as the Olympic and Paralympic Games break down barriers by bringing together people from all around the world and all walks of life. The participants may carry the flags of many nations, but they come together under the shared banner of equality and fair play, understanding and mutual respect.”

For his part, the UN General Assembly President noted that “The Olympic Movement aspires to contribute to a peaceful future for all humankind through the educational value of sport. The Games will bring together athletes from all parts of the world in the greatest of international sports events as a means to promote peace, mutual understanding and goodwill among nations and peoples — goals that are also part of the founding values of the United Nations.”

About the Olympic Truce

The Olympic Truce, which dates back to the 9th century BC, supports the idea that throughout the Olympic Games, individuals, not countries, compete against each other in peaceful sport without the burden of politics, religion or racism.

In 1992, the International Olympic Committee introduced the concept of the Olympic Truce to the modern Olympic Games, and in 1993 the United Nations General Assembly urged its member states to observe the Olympic Truce. Sebastian Coe, on behalf of the UK government, presented the Olympic Truce Resolution for the 2012 Games, which for the first time received the unanimous support of all 193 UN Member States. Through this document, the UN invites its Member States to observe and promote peace before, during and after the Games in order to serve as a window for dialogue and to protect the interests of athletes and sport in general.

Many Muslim athletes to fast after London Olympics

WITH the London Games fast approaching and the Islamic holy month of Ramadan already here, Muslim athletes are faced with a dilemma of Olympian proportions.

Muslims are required to abstain from food and drink from dawn to dusk during the 30-day month of Ramadan, which began Friday in most countries.

During long summer days in London, that translates into 18 hours of fasting - something that many Muslim athletes consider impossible to do without losing their competitive edge.

Many of the 3,500 or so Muslim athletes expected to compete at the London Olympics will keep eating as usual.

“I could not fast. I need all that stuff, like protein, carbs and minerals,” Egyptian kayaker Mustafa Saied told The Associated Press. “I can do it after Ramadan and Allah will accept it because there was an important reason.”

Some have looked for Islamic tenets that allow exemptions from fasting, such as for those traveling.

Others decided to postpone fasting until after competitions, and some will compensate for the lost days with charity work or by donating to the poor.

“It’s impossible for us to fast Ramadan during the London Olympics,” said Yasser Hefny, an Egyptian modern pentathlete. “We have five disciplines to perform. We do a lot of effort during the whole day.”

The High Egyptian Islamic Council gave athletes a reprieve by announcing a fatwa, or religious edict, stating that Olympic athletes are not required to fast during coaching or competition.

London 2012 Olympics will be held from 27 July 2012 to 12 August 2012. Place your ticket order online and secure your Olympic Tickets today. Olympic Athletics

Athletics is an exclusive collection of sporting events that involve competitive running, jumping, throwing, and walking. The most common types of athletics competitions are track and field ,road running, cross country running, and race walking. The simplicity of the competitions, and the lack of a need for expensive equipment, makes athletics one of the most commonly competed sports in the world.
Athletics is mostly an individual sport, with the exception of relay races and competitions which combine athletes performances for a team score, such as cross country.
According to historical records, the first ancient Olympic Games can be traced back to 776 BC. They were dedicated to the Olympian gods and were staged on the ancient plains of Olympia.
Olympia, the site of the ancient Olympic Games, is in the western part of the Peloponnese which, according to Greek mythology, is the island of "Pelops", the founder of the Olympic Games. Imposing temples, votive buildings, elaborate shrines and ancient sporting facilities were combined in a site of unique natural and mystical beauty. Olympia functioned as a meeting place for worship and other religious and political practices as early as the 10th century B.C. The central part of Olympia was dominated by the majestic temple of Zeus, with the temple of Hera parallel to it.
The Olympic Games were closely linked to the religious festivals of the cult of Zeus, but were not an integral part of a rite. According to specialists, the Olympic Games owed their purity and importance to religion.
Now, to continue these events London Olympics 2012 start Athletics from Friday, 3 August to Saturday, 12 August 2012, at the Olympic Stadium. 2,000 athletes will try to get Gold through running, walking, jumping and throwing. Medals will be distributed between the champions of Athletics. Now you can buy your Olympic Athletics Tickets with our unbelievable range of short prices from Global Ticket Market.

Fans Olympic Canoe Slalom

The canoe slalom events at the Olympic Games combine speed, stamina, and immense concentration. Those who compete in the event attempt to navigate rapids and currents flowing at up to 13 cubic meters per second, all while crossing gates and racing to the finish line.

In 1970, the International Olympic Committee voted to include the sport at the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich. That year, four total events -- three men's and one women's -- were contested, and East German athletes won gold medals in each of the events.

During the next IOC session, held in August of 1972, IOC members voted to remove the sport from the Olympic program. Thus, the sport would not be contested again in the Olympic Games for 20 years.

London 2012 Olympic will present Olympic Boxing from Sunday, 29 July to Thursday 2 August 2012, at the Lee Valley White Water Centre. 82 athletes will contest for 4 Medals. You can get Olympic Canoe Slalom Tickets on affordable prices from Global Ticket Market.

Olympic Canoe Sprint

Canoe Sprint events are head-to-head races conducted on still water, as opposed to the white-water time trials of the Canoe Slalom competition. In canoes, athletes race single (men's C1) or in pairs (men's C2). In kayaks, athletes race either single (men's K1 and women's K1), in pairs (men's K2 and women's K2) or in fours (men's K4 and women's K4).

Canoe Sprint depends on immense core and upper-body strength, as well as great stamina. Technique is vital too, to ensure getting the maximum out of every stroke.

European person John MacGregor was the founder of Canoe Sprint. He also formed the first-ever kayak club “The Royal Canoe Club of London” on the 25 July 1866 in London.

He first Canoeing competition, organised by MacGregor, was held in 1869. In 1871 the “New York Canoe Club” was established. By the 1890s, canoe sport was popular all over the European continent.

The programme for London 2012 Olympic will showcase Olympic Canoe Sprint from Monday, 6 July to Saturday 11 August 2012, at the Eton Dorney. 248 athletes will contest for 12 Medals. You can get Olympic Canoe Sprint Tickets from Global Ticket Market on affordable price.

Olympic Athletics Race Walk

Race walking is a long-distance athletic event. Although it is a foot race, it is different from running in that one foot must appear to be in contact with the ground at all times. There are two rules that govern race walking. The first dictates that the athlete's back toe cannot leave the ground until the heel of the front foot has touched. Violation of this rule is known as loss of contact. The second rule requires that the supporting leg must straighten from the point of contact with the ground and remain straightened until the body passes directly over it.

Race walking entered the Olympics in 1904 when an 880-yard walk was a part of the 10-event “all-around” competition that eventually morphed into the decathlon. There was a 3000-meter race walk in the unofficial 1906 Games, then race walking made its official Olympic debut in 1908 with 3500-meter and 10-mile events (both won by Great Britain’s George Larmer). Walking events have since taken place at several distances. The 50-kilometer race walk became an Olympic event in 1932; the 20-kilometer men's event replaced the 10-kilometer walk in 1956.

London Olympic 2012 will showcase the Race Walking Matches Venue (The Mall London) from 4 August to 11 August.Fans of the racewalking can get the racewalking tickets at Global Ticket Market on easy prices.

Olympic Equestrian Eventing

In1900,  Equestrian events have been held during the Olympics in Paris when jumping events were occured. In 1900, a high jump and a long jump for horses were held for the only time, while in 1920, vaulting made a single appearance on the Olympic programme. Otherwise, the programme has rarely varied.

However, equestrian events were not held again until 1912 in Stockholm. In 1952, equestrian sports events during the Olympics were contested by men only. These restrictions were lifted, and since then men and women have competed against each other in the equestrian events.
Equestrian events in the Olympics have evolved with society into one of the only Olympic events inviting skilled men and women to share the arena in competition. This sport yields a deeper appreciation of the athletes, both human and animals, presenting during Olympic Equestrian programs.

London 2012 Olympic will present Olympic Equestrian Eventing  from Saturday,28 July to Tuesday 31 July 2012, at the Greenwich Park. 75 athletes will contest for 2 Medals. You can get Olympic Equestrian Eventing Tickets on affordable prices from Global Ticket Market.

Olympic Questrian Dressage

Dressage is one of the Olympicequestrian sports. The modern Olympics commenced in 1896 with equestrian events appearing in the 1900 Paris Games. It was the 1912 Stockholm Games where the 'military test' first appeared and evolved into the separate Olympic disciplines of dressage, eventing, and stadium jumping.

Horses have been used for the military. Horses had to be obedient and maneuverable; a system of training was developed, first documented in the writing of the Greek Xenophon. The system of training was built upon throughout the ages, with many well-known riding masters, military and civilian, writing books expounding their methods.
By 1912, the equestrian disciplines dressage, jumping, and eventing were included. However, the riders continued to be all male and predominantly military for a few decades. The United States Cavalry at Ft. Riley exchanged ideas and instructors with the schools in Europe and started the trend that brought dressage training not only to the military but to civilians in the United States.
The Equestrian competition at London 2012 is made up of three disciplines: Dressage, Eventing and Jumping. Each discipline requires different skills from the riders and horses competing from Thursday 2 August to Thursday 9 August 2012, at the Aquatics Centre – Olympic Park. 136 (68 men, 68 women) athletes will contest for 8 Medals. You can get Olympic Equestrian Dressage Tickets on affordable prices from Global Ticket Market.
